It’s worth knowing, if you are holidaying in Italy, that on the first Sunday of every month, entry to many state museums, gardens, monuments and archaeological sites, is free. In 2014, the government introduced Domenica al museo, or Sunday at the Museum, to encourage more people to enjoy Italian culture and history. Not all are included – although notables such as The Colosseum, The Uffizi Gallery in Florence and The Academia Gallery in Venice, are. Best advice, on the first Sunday of each month, is to arrive early, especially at the big hitters.
The Italian Ministry of Culture and Environment lists all participating galleries etc – although in Italian, it’s fairly clear what’s what, especially as it helpfully categorised by region. And these are some of the amazing places you’ll be able to visit if you get organised!
