Troyes is a town in the Grand Est region of northeastern France. Its medieval old town features narrow, cobbled streets lined with colorful, half-timbered houses, mostly dating from the 16th century. The town is home to several Gothic churches with striking stained-glass windows. These include the Troyes Cathedral, the Église Sainte-Madeleine and the Basilique Saint-Urbain. (Wikipedia)
We arrived in Troyes as it was just beginning to get dark and by the time we headed out, it was properly dark. However, this just made this town even more magical, especially as Christmas was starting to become apparent, with super stylish street decorations, amazing shop windows and twinkling lights in windows above the street frontages. The sense of history is palpable – if someone, medieval style, had chucked a bucket of dirty water (or whatever they chucked…) out of a top window in the half-timbered houses, I wouldn’t have been surprised. It is perfectly preserved – and you can really get a sense of what a life would have been like 700-800 years ago.
Our stay in this beautiful town, and the gorgeous apartment we found, was all too short, so we have decided to make a return visit when do the drive back to Istria in January.
We got to see Troyes in daylight as we left on Thursday morning – and it just made us more determined to return in the new year.
And, it’s not every day you see a gun store, housed in a medieval building…
We decided to avoid toll roads as much as possible on the way to Calais, and are so glad we did, as we spotted something very spectacular on the way. Off to our left, we saw, rising in the distance, what looked like a huge, magnificent structure – and from the road signs, we identified this as Laon Cathedral – which dates from the 12th century. This is definitely a place being factored in to our return visit.
Via Booking.com we found a brilliant apartment, right in the heart of the medieval town centre. Parking was great – we actually got a spot right oppposite, and Aurelien, the owner, couldn’t have been more helpful. He’s renovated his apartment perfectly – attention to detail was brilliant, with tasteful decoration throughout, a super comfy bed and a well stocked kitchen. Plus a TV with Netflix. Always a bonus.
