We can just never resist a trip to Los Caracoles, whenever we are in the Nerja/Frigiliana area – the “Snail” hotel with pod-like rooms and suites is just super-cute and this time we had amazing weather. In the past we have stayed on a Friday or a Saturday evening and have been able to dine in the hotel restaurant – a big pod of its own. However, we realised on this visit that these are the only two nights it is open. You can have food brought to your room or, if you don’t mind driving or taking a taxi, Frigiliana is about 4km away and has many lovely eateries. We chose to eat in the restaurant, located just down the hill on the right hand side as you go back towards Frigiliana – Restaurante Venta el Cortijo.
We ate there at 8pm on a Sunday night in late April – there were only four other diners, but the food and service were impeccable. Succulent, spicy prawns (lots of them), a huge grilled sole, a swordfish steak, Andalucian style potatoes, a big salad and a bottle of beautiful crisp, white wine – all for under 40 euros. The views from the terrace, where we ate, were worth that alone.
Previous stays at Los Caracoles have been quite spectacular weather-wise. It’s very high up in the hills, so even when people are baking on Burriana Beach down in Nerja, we’ve either been wrapped in a shroud of cloud or under a torrential downpour. (Word of warning – the pathways to the pods are steep and terracotta tiled, so treacherous in the rain. Last time, I gave up & walked barefoot in the downpour…)
However, this time, we arrived in blazing early afternoon sunshine & heat. The restaurant is open daily until 5pm, so we chose to eat before checking in. The outdoor terrace is a perfect place to enjoy lunch – a panoramic view down to the Mediterranean and sweeping back to the mountains behind. Just stunning. As, again, was the food – but we know this, having experienced it before and knowing that this is a bit of a destination restaurant in the area.
On this visit we stayed in one of the en-suite rooms, rather than a suite and paid £59.00 via booking.com. Lunch was an additional £26 for the risotto and salmon & goats cheese salad, two beers and three glasses of wine. Exceptional value!
Our room was very similar to ones we’ve stayed in before at Los Caracoles – big comfy double bed, plenty of storage if you’re staying more than one night, air con, wi-fi, en suite bathroom with a bath, rather just a shower and a lovely balcony with the rounded “window”. Decor is very quirky – mosaic tiles and sinks, copper taps, Moroccan style lighting, bright colours. The kind of thing you just need to go with.
An utterly gorgeous afternoon was spent, on the most comfortable sun loungers, snoozing off lunch, with a late April sun beating down. The water was still a bit too chilly to take a dip in the pool, but we didn’t feel that we missed out. Being the only people lounging around the pool, we felt we were in our own private Spanish garden, for a little while. Bliss.
